Sounds like poorly done CRC. The only time I've experienced that burnt popcorn/sulfur taste is from very shitty shit crc wax. Typically a sugary consistency, almost white/very light yellow, smells like vick's vapor rub. i got some dabs that taste horrible and smell like sulfur.
