Greataxe is a single large die, and benefits more from half orcs and barbarians ability to add an additional damage die on a crit. As an aside its damage is more 'swingy' in that a 1-12 are equally probable. Greatsword is two smaller die, and benefits more from the great weapon fighting style which allows you to reroll 1s and 2s on damage.
